Breast Enlargement / Breast Augmentation / Boob Job

Breast enlargement enhances the size and shape of a woman's breasts commonly for the purposes of:

- Enlarging breast size for women that feel their breasts are too small
- Balancing out uneven breast sizes
- Correcting breast reduction after significant weight loss or pregnancy
- Reconstructive technique

The motivations for getting a breast augmentation can vary, but it is important to discuss your intentions and goals you wish to achieve through breast enlargement. Women who are unrealistic about the outcome of a breast enlargement procedure will generally not be happy with the results of a breast augmentation. A boob job candidate should understand that the surgical procedure can improve appearance, as well as confidence, but the breast surgery is not a means of reaching perfection.

Preparing for Breast Enlargement / Boob Job

Prior to the breast enlargement surgery you will have a personal consultation.

During this consultation, the surgeon will inform you about the procedure, explain its risks and limitations. Besides, you will be asked about your desired breast size and anything else related to the appearance of your breasts that you feel is important. This will help your surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they realistically can be achieved. The more specific you are with the surgeon the more likely you will have boob job results that meet your satisfaction

Your plastic surgeon will examine your breasts and perhaps take photographs for your medical record (which is subject to the medical confidentiality). He will consider such factors as the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin and the placement of your nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipples). If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift may be recommended in conjunction with augmentation.

You will also need to have your EGC and blood picture done.

Anaesthesia during the breast enlargement

General anaesthesia is used in most instances of breast augmentation procedures, so the patient is unconscious during surgery.

If you would prefer to have your operation done under local anaesthesia you can discuss it with the surgeon. Under local anaesthesia the patient is calm and drowsy, but awake.

Breast Enlargement Surgery

There are a lot of different types and sizes of breast implants being used. In our clinic the surgeon uses saline filled breast implants and silicone gel-filled breast implants. The surgeon will help you to find out which implant is best for you.

Besides he will help you determine which breast augmentation procedure is right for you. The most common incision is made on the lower portion of the breast, just slightly away from the crease where the breast meets the chest, so that any scar will still be covered, even by a small bathing suit. This is called an Inframammary augmentation.

A Transaxillary or Axillary incision can also be made in the axilla or armpit.

After the incisions are made the breast enlargement surgeon is able to create a pocket, either on top of the pectoral muscle or beneath them, and insert the implant.

Using this method the nerves around the areola won't be damaged, so that you will be to breastfeed your baby after the breast augmentation.

No evidence supports that silicone from silicone implants leak into breast milk. Silicone is very similar to a substance used to treat a baby's stomach gas.

The boob job will take form 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Recovery after the breast enlargement

After the breast augmentation a stay at the clinic ranging from two to three days is advisable .

During your stay at the clinic your breasts will be wrapped in a dressing. This reduces the risk of bleeding and holds the implant in good position. When you will be ready to go the dressing will be removed and you will be given a surgical bra. You should wear it as directed by your surgeon.

You're likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you'll be up and around in 24 to 48 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor. You may also experience a burning sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as bruising fades.

Your stitches will come out in a week to 10 days after the breast enlargement, but the swelling in your breasts may take three to five weeks to disappear.

Possible Side-Effects / Risks of a boob job

Breast augmentation is relatively straightforward. But as with any operation, there are risks associated with surgery and specific complications associated with this procedure. The most common problem, capsular contracture, occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten. This squeezing of the soft implant can cause the breast to feel hard. Capsular contracture can be treated in several ways, and sometimes requires either removal or "scoring" of the scar tissue, or perhaps removal or replacement of the implant.

As with any surgical procedure, excessive bleeding following the operation may cause some swelling and pain. If excessive bleeding continues, another operation may be needed to control the bleeding and remove the accumulated blood. A small percentage of women develop an infection around an implant. This may occur at any time, but is most often seen within a week after surgery. In some cases, the implant may need to be removed for several months until the infection clears. A new implant can then be inserted.

Some women report that their nipples become oversensitive, under sensitive, or even numb. You may also notice small patches of numbness near your incisions. These symptoms usually disappear within time, but may be permanent in some patients.

Does the Breast Implant cause cancer?

There is no scientific evidence that breast enlargement increases the risk of breast cancer. In fact, a few studies indicate that women with implants are more likely to have their breast cancer identified at an early stage.

How to behave after the breast enlargement

You may not drink any alcohol, not even beer or champagne, for 4 weeks after the boob job.

Most patients will not be able to shower for between 3 to 7 days after breast augmentation, and returning to work can probably be done within a few days to a week. Activity that is more strenuous should be avoided for about a month as your body continues to heal. Extreme care with the breast area should be taken for at least a month following breast enlargement. You shouldn't use a tanning bed or a sauna for about eight weeks.

The result of the breast enlargement will be visible after three months at the earliest. That's when any persistent mild swelling usually disappears and the final contour will be visible.

Don't expect to look or feel great right after breast surgery. Even though the newer techniques are believed to reduce some post-operative discomforts, you may still experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding and temporary numbness. Pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon, though you may still feel stiff and sore for a few days. Although most of the bruising and swelling usually disappears within three weeks, some swelling may remain for six months or more.

The stitches are removed or dissolve on their own within the first week to 10 days after breast surgery.
