It's no secret that with time upper and lower eyelids can droop and bulge. Combined with drooping eyebrows over their bony ridges, some faces unfairly take on a tired or even angry look. Our techniques of eyelid shaping remove hanging baggy skin, trim bulging fat, and fill hollow areas. We can unmask the tired, worried look and wake up your true facial beauty.
Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty) can correct sagging eyelids, pouches beneath the eyes and excess folds around the eyes. This surgical procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat on upper and lower eyelids and is often done in conjunction with other surgical procedures including facelift and/or brow lift. It won't, however, remove crow's feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.
Before the operation you will have a so called "pre-op" visit. During this visit you will be able to discuss your expectations with the surgeon and the surgeon will inform you about the procedure and explain its risks and limitations.
Prior to the operation we will make pictures of your face. The pictures are for the patient's medical report and are subject to the medical confidentiality.
You will also need to have your EGC and blood picture done.
Eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anaesthesia , which numbs the area around your eyes. You'll be awake during the surgery, but relaxed and insensitive to pain. (However, you may feel some tugging or occasional discomfort.) If you prefer to sleep throughout the surgery you can also be put under general anaesthesia .
Blepharoplasty usually takes one to two hours, depending on the extent of the surgery. If you're having all four eyelids done, the surgeon will probably work on the upper lids first, then the lower ones.
In a typical procedure, the surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of your eyelids; in the creases of your upper lids, and just below the lashes in the lower lids. Working through these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removes excess fat, and often trims sagging skin and muscle. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures .
Any fresh wounds will be coved with a special plaster. On the first two days following the surgery you will be given cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising.
Your eyelids may feel tight and sore as the anesthesia wears off, but you can control any discomfort with pain medication. Bruising varies form person to person: it reaches its peak during the first week, and generally lasts anywhere from two weeks to a month. For the first few weeks you may also experience tearing, sensitivity to light, and temporary changes in your eyesight, such as blurring or double vision.
The stitches will be removed fife to six days after surgery. Once they're out, the swelling and discoloration around your eyes will gradually subside, and you'll start to look and feel much better.
If you are getting your upper and lower eyelids done at the same time, we recommend you to stay at the clinic for two days after surgery.
All surgery carries some uncertainty and risk. There is always a possibility of complications, including infection or a reaction to the anaesthesia.
The minor complications that occasionally follow blepharoplasty include double or blurred vision for a few days; temporary swelling at the corner of the eyelids; and a slight asymmetry in healing or scarring. Excessive bleeding is rare and small bruises disappear after about two weeks. If the upper eyelid surgery is preformed well there shouldn't be any complications.
The positive results of your eyelid surgery - the more alert and youthful look - will last for about 6 to 10 years. For some people, these results are permanent.
You should be able to read or watch television after two or three days.
Since it causes fluid retention, you will have to avoid drinking any alcohol (even beer or champagne) for 4 weeks.
As a rule you will be able to go back to work after 8 days. After about 14 days, depending on your rate of healing, you'll probably be able to wear makeup to hide the bruising that remains.
You shouldn't use a tanning bed or a sauna for about eight weeks.
You won't be able to wear contact lenses for about two to three weeks.
After 4 weeks you will be able to do sports.
