Labiaplasty or Labia Reduction Surgery is a cosmetic surgery designed to reduce and aethetically shape the inner lips of the labia. Enlarged inner lips (labia minora) of the vagina can be functionally or psychically bothersome. Local irritation, problems with personal hygiene, interference with sexual intercourse and discomfort during cycling, horse back riding, wearing tight trousers, walking or sitting are, indications for surgical reduction. Patients usually like to decide the size of their labia but it is important to remember the function of the labia minora as well. The labia minora protect the vaginal opening when the thighs are spread and therefore, overcorrection is not recommended.

Before the labiaplasty you will have a so called "pre-surgery" visit. During this visit you will be able to discuss your expectations with the surgeon and the surgeon will inform you about the procedure and explain its risks and limitations. Before the labial surgery the surgeon may take pictures of the area. The pictures are for the patient's medical report and are subject to the medical confidentiality.
You will also need to have your EGC and blood picture done.
Labiaplasty is a relatively simple surgery and is performed under general anesthesia. A surgeon will trim the labia so its sides no longer protrude. They will do this by simply cutting and re-stitching the inner lips. This labia reduction will also make the inner lips look symmetrical. The surgeon will take care to obtain as natural a result as possible. Care is also taken to avoid over-resection of the labia and to avoid interference with the clitoris or urethral opening. Scars are minimal and normally only visible to the trained eye. Sensitivity is normally not interfered with. This procedure can be called Labiaplasty, Labioplasty, Labial Reduction, Labia Reduction Surgery, or Vaginoplasty.
The reduction of the labia minora may serve to improve the physical comfort and sexuality of the patient.
Patients stay at the clinic for two days after the labial reduction surgery. They are under supervision 24 hours per day to ensure optimum and quick recovery.
There will be a dressing in that area that will be similar to a pad worn during menstruation. Initial soreness, swelling and discomfort are likely to be experienced in the days immediately following the labiaplasty. Urinating might also be uncomfortable at first, but this unwanted sensation will soon pass. Overall, there are no permanent side effects to be concerned about.
Recovery is swift and usually doesn't take more than 1 - 2 weeks. Patients may go back to their daily routines one week after labiaplasty but with extreme caution. Patients are to avoid strenuous activity and especially sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks after labia reduction.
